In 2023, Benjamin Witt wrote six compositions in response to six paintings from an exhibition by Stephen Brameld & Jay Staples, for the debut record of his experimental jazz outfit, GunFu (Benjamin Witt, Ben VanDerwal, Harry Mitchell, Sean Little and Marc Earley).
Here, in reverse to the original exercise, Brameld & Staples have responded to the recordings of GunFu’s new release, GUNFU TWO. This painted feedback to the record, track by track, will be presented in the Lawson Flats lobby, followed by a live performance of the album.
In a broader celebration of the improvisational traditions that jazz and painting share, more artworks by Brameld & Staples will spill into the lounge, surrounding the performance on opening night.
Exhibition continues through to 19 December. Gallery hours are 11am - 4pm Monday to Friday, 12pm - 4pm on Saturdays. Viewing for non-members by appointment. View the catalogue here.
About Stephen Brameld & Jay Staples
Stephen Brameld & Jay Staples are WA-based self-taught artists working in painting, sculpture and video. Their practice is deeply collaborative — they work simultaneously on the same surfaces, exploring improvisation, shared consciousness, regeneration, and the tightrope between figuration and abstraction. You'll recognise their hand from the expansive mural at Luis'.
