More about Ortaire de Coupigny :
Ortaire de Coupigny is a contemporary French artist renowned for his enigmatic and thought-provoking artworks, which bridge the realms of fantasy and reality.
Ortaire de Coupigny has captivated the art world with his iconic series of Sardines Tin Can creations. With meticulous attention to detail and an impeccable understanding of form and colour, he skilfully captures the essence of nostalgia and whimsy within each tin can, infusing them with an undeniable charm and elegance that transcends the ordinary.
Ortaire works with various materials and pigments to create his unique hand-painted fish before suspending them in paraffin wax and covering them with transparent resin. Genuine sardine tins (manufactured in his local area) are used where possible to create an interesting dynamic between an industrial, mass-produced everyday object and art. He has developed a realistic technique - using wax and paint - to make the "tenants" of these cans as lively as possible, so that their porthole gazes scrutinize us as much as they question us.
His works have been exhibited in prestigious galleries and art fairs worldwide, such as the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 2008, captivating audiences with their timeless appeal and evocative storytelling.
