Join us for the next of our brilliant talks presented by the Foundation for the Western Australian Museum to hear the stories of ships wrecked along the WA Coast between 1629 and 1727, as told by Corioli Souter, the Curator of Maritime Archaeology at the WA Museum.
The Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC), or Dutch East India Company, was the world's first multinational corporation, holding a monopoly to carry out trade activities in Asia. VOC was also one of the most successful chartered trading companies in history.
Corioli will discuss how the excavations (underwater, and on land) of shipwrecks along our coast have helped the WA Museum's Department of Maritime History to uncover and understand the private lives and business activities of the VOC, including interesting details of life at that time, trade in the Indian Ocean, and the drama of mutinies….

About the speaker
Corioli Souter is a curator, archaeologist, and head of the Department of Maritime Heritage at the Western Australian Museum (WAM) often working in collaboration with other state, national, international museums and collections; tertiary institutions; heritage agencies; community organisations and the private sector.
Corioli has taken part in over 40 archaeological research projects in Australia and overseas, and has led and participated in archaeological surveys, heritage assessments, excavations, and interdisciplinary research efforts that have resulted in various reports, publications, exhibitions and documentary films.
A Phd Candidate, Corioli’s current research focus is the archaeology of the Indian Ocean and the history of collecting in Western Australia.
